THE HISTORY OF SPARKPORT PHARMACY

HEAD OFFICE STAFF
To date the group has eight retail pharmacies in and around the greater Durban area as well as one franchise store in Chatsworth. Over the past 2 decades, Sparkport has established itself as a household name and a recognised innovator in the healthcare sector. The doors of Sparkport Pharmacy first opened for business in December 1983. Two lecturing colleagues, Goolam Mahomed and Solly Suleman, decided to leave the education field and brave commerce and industry, started the pharmacy. The opening of the pharmacy can be described as being quiet and unannounced. After all, the premises was merely a 100 square metre shop in Sparks Road. To many it would seem as though this would be one of many existing insignificant pharmacies around Durban. However through sheer dedication and commitment by the two visionaries, the group has grown to its immense success that it is today

WARNER BEACH STAFF
At present the store in Overport, adjacent to the original store is now the single largest pharmacy in KZN and occupies over 1000m2. However, this massive expansion did not come cheap. From December 1983 to 1992 the team had worked long, hard hours with a vision of a hyper-pharmacy in mind. They were determined to offer a 14-hour daily service to customers, which also incorporated being the most reasonably priced, reachable healthcare shop in the greater Overport area.
The team realised that there was an urgent need for community pharmacy, since the majority of the population cannot afford the spiralling cost of medicines. In addition to offering customers massive discounts on prescription medicines, affordable primary healthcare was also a concern. Thus the pharmacy clinic, with a qualified nursing sister offered a wide range of services like post and ante-natal care, diabetes, blood pressure and cholesterol testing as well as family planning, pap smears and baby immunisations at affordable prices.
